Training in the open water sector
The training takes place under realistic maritime conditions on the Baltic Sea coast. As Claude Dornier already recognized, the area of the Flensburg Fjord enables a wide variety of training situations within short flight times on the same day:
Due to this diversity, Flensburg is particularly suitable for advanced training as well as for open water operations under varying wind and sea conditions, including “rough water” training.
For basic training, we prefer to use more sheltered areas such as Ribnitz-Damgarten or Heringsdorf. There, the water circuits that are important for getting started can be practiced intensively and numerous take-offs and landings (“splash and go”) can be carried out in a short time. This structured repetition creates the necessary confidence in handling the aircraft on the water.
In the advanced training section, the focus is increasingly on open-water procedures, advanced water handling and precise maneuvers in the port and jetty area, especially when mooring and docking.
This graduated training – from sheltered waters to challenging open-water conditions – creates a sound basis for the safe operation of seaplanes in coastal and marine environments.
