FLIGHT SCHOOL
BALTIC SEAPLANE – EASA ATO AND CAAT- FTO
Baltic Seaplane GmbH is an approved training organization (ATO) of the Schleswig-Holstein Aviation Authority (DE.SH.ATO.004) for EASA-compliant licenses and ratings as well as an approved flight school (FTO 0036) under the Thai aviation authority CAAT.
Our focus is on professional seaplane training under real coastal and open-water conditions. The basic training takes place mainly on our Cessna 172P Amphibian (floatplane). In addition, we also offer training on the Lake LA-4 Buccaneer flying boat. We see ourselves as a competence center for modern seaplane operations – from the classic SEP (Sea) authorization to preparation for commercial missions.
International training & official cooperation
We serve customers from all over Europe, including from:
Germany, Belgium, Denmark, England, the Netherlands, Iceland, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Switzerland and Greece.
Training is provided in German or English.
In the context of extensions, renewals and validations, we are in regular contact with the respective national aviation authorities and have already worked successfully with numerous European authorities to implement authorizations and licenses in a compliant manner.
Training in the open water sector
The training takes place under realistic maritime conditions on the Baltic Sea coast. As Claude Dornier already recognized, the area of the Flensburg Fjord enables a wide variety of training situations within short flight times on the same day:
Protected water areas
Open stretches of sea
onshore and offshore wind conditions
Different wave and swell situations
Due to this diversity, Flensburg is particularly suitable for advanced training as well as for open water operations under varying wind and sea conditions, including “rough water” training.
For basic training, we prefer to use more sheltered areas such as Ribnitz-Damgarten or Heringsdorf. There, the water circuits that are important for getting started can be practiced intensively and numerous take-offs and landings (“splash and go”) can be carried out in a short time. This structured repetition creates the necessary confidence in handling the aircraft on the water.
In the advanced training section, the focus is increasingly on open-water procedures, advanced water handling and precise maneuvers in the port and jetty area, especially when mooring and docking.
This graduated training – from sheltered waters to challenging open-water conditions – creates a sound basis for the safe operation of seaplanes in coastal and marine environments.
Professional training & international projects
In addition to the classic SEP (Sea) seaplane license, we also train professional pilots for commercial open-water seaplane operations.
We are currently supporting the development of modern seaplane operations in Thailand. In this context, we are active as an authorized seaplane school (FTO) under the CAAT and support the structured training of pilots for commercial seaplane operations.
We work closely with experienced experts from the Maldivian seaplane industry to transfer best practices from established open-water and saltwater operations to new structures.
Seaplane flights are currently being developed in Thailand – we are contributing European training experience and international open-water expertise.
